Programming Fundamentals · For beginners

Build your
programming foundations.

Start with clear examples and small programs in Java or C++. Get comfortable with the building blocks before moving on to larger coding problems.

Starting point: Beginner. You do not need previous coding experience to explore the fundamentals path.

Two books labeled Java and C++.

One starting point.
Two language paths.

Java and C++ can both be a place to begin. Choose one language to focus on, then take time to understand what each example is doing.

Java

Work through the basic ideas in Java, from keeping a value in a variable to following repeated steps and organising a small program.

Example topics
  • Variables and values
  • Loops
  • Functions
  • Arrays
  • Object-oriented programming

Use a tiny example to follow how values change. Ask what each line contributes before adding the next piece.

C++

Explore the basic ideas in C++, using small programs to connect the code you write with the steps you want the computer to follow.

Example topics
  • Variables and values
  • Loops
  • Functions
  • Arrays
  • Object-oriented programming

Keep examples small enough to trace by hand. Notice the result, change one thing, and explain what changed.

These example topics describe the starting direction. The full program scope and session details will be shared with the announcement.

Small programs.
Clear explanations.

01

Read an example

Begin with a small program and a clear question. Identify the values it starts with and the result it is meant to produce.

02

Trace the steps

Follow the program one step at a time. Watch how a value changes, where a loop repeats, and when a function returns.

03

Explain the idea

Describe the steps in your own words. If a line is hard to explain, that is a useful place to pause and ask a question.

A foundation to build on.

Once variables, loops, functions, and simple collections feel familiar, explore how those ideas connect to problem solving.
